This February 27th marks the anniversary of some of the most amazing and interesting historical events that have shaped the course of history. On this day in 1594, Henry IV was crowned King of France, marking the beginning of centuries of monarchy in the nation. In 1801, Washington, D.C. was placed under the Congressional jurisdiction, setting the stage for the nation’s capital. On this same day in 1860, Abraham Lincoln gave a legendary speech at Cooper Union in the city of New York, initiating his rise to the Presidency. On February 26th, some of the most amazing historical events of all time have occurred. In 1548, the Ottoman Empire's navy, led by Piri Reis, successfully retook the port of Aden in modern-day Yemen. This was a monumental event, as it marked the first time that the Bible was printed using movable type. In 1782, engineer James Watt was granted a patent for a rotary motion for the steam engine. This invention was pivotal for the industrial revolution and led to the modern machines that we still use today. In 1813, the first US raw cotton-to-cloth mill was founded in Waltham, Massachusetts. In 1909, the Great White Fleet, the first US fleet to circumnavigate the globe, returned to Virginia.
